Alternative Education Discussion Series: Alternative Education 101

Join us Thursday, January 17th, 2013 from 7 to 8:30pm for the second instalment in the Lady Evelyn Alternative School Council's Alternative Education Discussion Series for 2012/2013.

Alternative Education 101
Whether you are new to the program,
have been around for a while
or are just curious.

The evening will consist of a panel discussion providing perspectives from the entire community: staff, students and parents, along with plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion.

The theme for the evening are the distinguishing features of alternative philosophy and practices (and what they look like in practice):
• A co-operative/non-competitive environment
• Innovative approaches to teaching and learning
• A balance between child-directed and child-centered learning
• Classes are purposefully designed as multi-grade groupings
• An integrated curriculum
• Pro-active parent involvement, particularly in developing school philosophy and in helping teachers develop and implement curriculum
• Student self evaluation and anecdotal reporting

Child care and refreshments will be provided. Please note, however, that children are more than welcome to attend the panel discussion. If child care is required, please RSVP before Tuesday, January 15th to monique.alexandra@gmail.com

The Varieties of Alternative Education: Background Materials 2

Some more videos...

Sir Ken Robinson on "Alternative Education is Good Education" -- TEDx talk in London

In late 2011, "Robinson presented a video TEDx talk in London, addressing how population growth and technology are fueling huge changes in education, and the imperative to make all schools progressive. He argues that the principles of what’s considered “alternative” education are those that should be applied to mainstream education."

TEDxYouth@Columbus: Katharine Dye- "An alternative education"

"Education can no longer be confined to the class room, students need to venture out into the world and learn from their environment. First hand experiences is what shapes us and students can not get that from a book or a test. They can on the other hand gain skills, knowledge, and experience through hands on learning in the "real world". How can we apply this to school and the class room? Eliminate the class room, take the student out in to the world and let them grow through experience and their community."

Alternative Program Review: Update and Discussion

Lady Evelyn Alternative School Council
Education Committee

Alternative Program Review
Update and Discussion
Thursday, September 24th,
7 to 8:30pm

3rd floor @ Lady Evelyn
63 Evelyn Ave, Ottawa ON

Join us for this important update of the school board's ongoing review of the alternative program.

Without widespread parental support and involvement, it is unlikely that the alternative program will continue to exist. If the program is shut down, the alternative schools will not be able to continue as they are. On a practical level, the catchment area will become smaller and busing will be impacted. On a more profound level, the non-competitive, sympathetic, multi-age, community-oriented atmosphere will change. If the program is saved, it is very likely that its delivery and locations will change. "Weak" alternative schools may close and those that remain may be asked to develop independent philosophies and provide accountability structures. Parental involvement and support will be key for this to work.

We encourage students to attend (and participate) in the evening's discussion, as the review has the potential to impact them most of all. As such, we will not be providing childcare.

Snacks, however, will be provided.

Background

The school board regularly conducts reviews of its’ various programs. A program review of alternative education began at the end of June. A final report will be produced by the end of January.

The school board's description of the process can be found at
http://www.ocdsb.ca/au_hi_program-reviews_EAPR.asp

The Alternative Schools Advisory Committee (ASAC, representing all alternative schools in the board and comprised primarily of alternative school parents) has a number of concerns regarding the review. The time that has been given to conduct the review is short. Although the steering committee has a diverse membership, they have no power to produce a report or even make recommendations. The review's objectives are fairly negative. And consultation is somewhat limited.

...and now for something completely different

Leo Tolstoy
Aside from his literary achievements (Anna Karenina and War and Peace among others), Tolstoy was also a harsh critic of the education system in his native Russia. His criticism was not only appropriate for other parts of the world during the 1800's when he was alive, but is also appropriate for today's problems in education. He started and ran a radical village-school for peasants on his Yasnaya Polyana property from 1860 to 1863. The school was aptly named "Yasnaya Polyana." From the back cover of Tolstoy on Education: "Tolstoy allowed his pupils to come and go as they pleased, and insisted that teachers, too, should be free to teach what and at whatever length they wished." Aside from Tolstoy on Education (translated by Leo Weiner), other good books concerning his views on education are Tolstoy As Teacher: Leo Tolstoy's Writings on Education by Tolstoy and Robert Blaisdell, and Tolstoy as a Schoolmaster by Ernest Howard Crosby.
